CPT. Nico A. Smith, commissioned through University of Illinois at Chicago ROTC in 2009 and received BFA in Graphic Design and Web Technology from Columbia College. He branched Military Intelligence, where he served as Platoon Leader, until 2011 when he deployed with the ILARNG Bilateral Embedded Support Team -A9(B.E.S.T. A9) and their state partner Poland dual slotted as Brigade S7 Engineer and Brigade Intelligence Officer. Stationed in AOR FOB GHAZNI RC-East, his service supporting Task Force
White Eagle awarded him the Polish Bronze Star. As BDE Engineer, he developed the Base Realignment and Closure/Transfer plan with 1 st INF DIV leadership, resulting in over 12 Million dollars saved and a
fortified base for the Afghan National Police to leverage in our fight against active terrorist and radical extremist groups.
In 2012, he developed a framework to leverage intelligence with signal soldiers. This training resulted in the C Co 341(-) 35M and 35F gaining familiarity with Key Terrain – Cyber, and providing exceptional intelligence during CYBER SHIELD 2013, the first implementation of intelligence during a National Guard
From 2015 to 2019, CPT. Nico Smith was the Red Cell Team Leader against the NSA Blue Team. He returned in 2018 as a red team lead against Michigan and Missouri. This led to his selection as the Red
Team Exercise lead for the Cyber Shield EXCON in 2019. There, he led 54 states red team assets, comprised of the National Guard Army, Air Guard, Coast Guard, and civilian industry partners.
Also, in 2015 he joined CPT 1636 who created US Cyber Commands First Title 10 Infrastructure and became one of the first members of 169 th Cyber Protections, the National Guards’ only 100% AGR team.
In 2017 a cyber incident at National Guard Bureau (NGB) occurred. He led the 169 th Cyber Protection Team to respond and assist in coordination with 91 st CY BDE. The result was attribution of the person(s) that leveraged the incident and evidence to support the discovery. NGB was also able to remediate the issues based on the information provided.
In civilian cyberspace CPT. Nico Smith volunteers 30hrs a month to college and high school students interested in gaining entry into the cyber career field. He also created the only functioning cyber challenge coin in the DOD.
He has over 15 years in Information Technology and 10years focused on developing defensive and offensive teams, privately and collegiately.
He has committed to improving cybersecurity and changing the way cyber is understood, leveraged, and cultivated. He currently holds the following positions:

• Director of Red Team Operations, Blacks in Cybersecurity inc.
