Luis has held positions of increasing responsibility in marketing, business development, program management, and product development since joining American Express in 2007. In his current role as VP, Product Development, Luis is tasked with delivering a holistic commercial API strategy to more efficiently distribute select American Express products and services to external partners and customers.
Prior to this, Luis led the ideation and delivery process for product development of non-card lending products for small and medium enterprises at American Express. This included the integration and re-launch of products under the Kabbage brand (acquired Oct. ’20), the launch of the SBA Payment Protection Program for COVID-19 relief, and the launch of pre-approved Business Loans in the US. Outside of American Express, Luis served as Director of Marketing at Veridium (formerly Hoyos Labs), a biometrics authentication startup, where he led corporate marketing strategy and product commercialization.
Luis has a strong record of success and has previously won the American Express President’s Club Leadership Award, awarded to top performers who have demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities. His career has been defined by an affinity to learn different product functions, specifically within ambiguous and ever-changing environments. What has remained constant, however, is an ability to influence and work collaboratively, bringing others with him to accomplish common goals, thus establishing a strong, positive brand as a leader, change agent, and mentor.
Luis holds an M.B.A. from ESADE Business School and a B. Sc. in Economics from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. A native of Puerto Rico, Luis finds every opportunity to head to the Caribbean to visit his family and practice his cooking skills. He is also an avid salsa dancer and teacher, a passion he shares with his wife Cristy, who owns a dance studio, CMG Dance Project, in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.
