Blaine Bonham, former Executive Vice President for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, created and oversaw a series of neighborhood-based programs called Philadelphia Green that grew into the nation’s largest urban greening program. Over four decades Philadelphia Green works with mostly low-income residents to plant over 400 community gardens and hundreds of street tree blocks and community parks; greens and manages thousands of vacant lots with crews through its workforce training program for ex-offenders, and works with community gardens to produce 20,000 pounds of surplus food annually to address Philadelphia’s food insecurity issues. Over the years local entrepreneurial enterprises developed to meet opportunities resulting from the city’s high level of greening activities. Blaine currently is a travel writer and photographer at BlaineBonham.com.
