Get the inside scoop on two new murals that will be added to uCity Square this summer and meet the artists behind them. Melinda Beck, a graphic designer based in New York, is creating a mural that will be hung on the wall of 3701 Market Street that faces Pivot Park. Oluwafemi, a visual artist–musician based in Philadelphia, is creating a mural that will be painted on the wall of 3624 Market Street that serves as a gateway to Innovation Walk. Together these murals will explore the work that goes on in uCity Square, reflect on past and future innovations in West Philadelphia, and encourage stronger connections to the surrounding communities. Beck is an illustrator, animator and graphic designer based in New York. Her work has appeared in publications such as Harper’s, the New Yorker, the New York Times, and Time, and her clients have included Nickelodeon, Nike, Random House, Southern Poverty Law Center, Target, and the United States Postal Service. Oluwafemi is a musician and visual artist. He was born in London, raised in Lagos, and has lived and worked in Philadelphia for nearly 20 years. In 2011, he co-founded the artist collaborative Worldtown, a group of musicians, deejays, visual and performance artists who celebrate unity in the diversity of people through music and art. More recently, he has created numerous murals around the city, at locations such as the Germantown Espresso Bar, the Divine Lorraine and Lola38 in West Philadelphia. This project would be his largest outdoor mural to date.
