ParallaxPHL is a podcast dedicated to understanding and growing a culture of civic innovation in Philadelphia. The name“Parallax” is borrowed from physics and optics—the way an object’s position or direction seems to change when seen from different points of view.

Our podcast focuses on inclusive civic innovation in Philadelphia, and on people working towards solutions to some of the most urgent challenges currently facing our city. Conversations on the program seek to increase knowledge exchange, examine complex challenges from a multiplicity of vantage points, and empower more residents to become actively involved in a community-driven, locally-focused approach to innovation.

This episode is a “parallax” conversation, a transdisciplinary discussion of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic facing Philly. We are in a moment of enormous change and upheaval impacting every aspect of our lives, not least our built and shared spaces.

The pandemic has—and will continue to have—huge impacts on our built environments. Access to safe shared spaces is critical. Rethinking both public space and shared interior environments, from congregate spaces to schools and workplaces, is urgent. Furthermore, many aspects of the built environment already create unequal impacts that, if not resolved in a thoughtful manner, are set to widen.

These impacts will require innovation across fields—rather than siloed approaches. Meanwhile, budget contractions mean that, more than ever, we need low-cost but high-impact solutions.

How do we identify and grapple with inequities while we develop solutions that will inevitably transform the built environment? What kinds of collaborations and partnerships do we need to rethink our shared spaces? What might solutions look like?

The episode will bring Philly thought leaders together to discuss the future of shared spaces, how we will change how we occupy space, and how we come together and collaborate, and the intersections between health, design, and social justice.
