Are you moving the needle?
At the end of the day, how do you know if you moved the needle —whether it be for groundbreaking research, increasing your step count, or turning your bright idea into a business?
Progress can feel elusive, perhaps especially this January as we find ourselves revisiting many of the COVID-19 practices we hoped to leave in 2021. But it’s important to remember we’re moving forward—and to keep going.
For me, progress can be tied to two other Ps: possibilities and perfection. When I think of progress, I often imagine how we can push what’s possible. Progress provides the space to reimagine and design new paths forward together.
But perfection can create barriers. Is this the best way forward? Has there been enough preparation? Are the conditions right?
This is not to say that we shouldn’t ask those questions. We should. But we can’t let them deter us from moving forward. At the Science Center, we talk about the importance of the mindset of progress over perfection. Small steps, 5% improvements, and taking the risk all build momentum.
This year, at Venture Cafe, we’re trying something new. Rather than outlining monthly themes, we’re exploring how we can power progress. Each quarter, we’ll look at innovations moving the needle from health to climate change.
Join us (virtually) Thursday as we kick off the first Thursday Gathering of 2022!
See you there,
P.S. We’ve decided to stay virtual through January so keep your Zoom links at the ready. Stay tuned for February updates.
