Why you should celebrate when team processes break

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
James Clear, Atomic Habits

It’s my favorite time of year.  As we move into the second half of Quarter 4 2021, we look to celebrate big wins, fuel the last push towards a milestone, and reflect on lessons and growth.

As we move towards the bold and ambitious goal-setting stage (hint: moonshots are on the #VCjawn horizon), I love to take the time to revisit processes and systems.

Growing and scaling, whether it be adding new team members or maximizing impact, likely means that processes will start to pop. We might need to create a set meeting time rather than informal water cooler moments as the team grows or change the point for handoffs as we add more partners.

In the moment, it’s easy to be frustrated. But I would like to suggest it’s a moment to highlight and celebrate.

When our processes or systems fall short, it’s usually because we’re growing in exciting and accelerated ways. I like to imagine the energy and excitement buzzing from a large popcorn machine.

Don’t let the moment pass by. For example, suggest that anyone on the team can call for a POP’D moment—Point Of Process Development. Naming it and taking a quick pause gives us an opportunity to ask for clarity and note a change in the system.

Like a great post-mortem or retrospective, rather than focusing on the who, a brief connect allows us to focus on the what and the how. What happened and how should we operate moving forward?

Finally, don’t forget to celebrate—if your process is changing, it’s most likely because you’re making progress and moving the needle.
